Anyone who lives, works, or attends school in Hillside, NJ, is eligible for a free (first time) library card with valid forms of identification. For more information ask at the library circulation desk.
RENEWING YOUR LIBRARY CARD
All cards (except non-resident fee cards) are valid for two years from
the date of issue. Cards can be renewed if the borrower does not owe
fines or have overdue items. You must show valid proof of address when
renewing.
LOST OR STOLEN CARD
Borrowers are responsible for all items borrowed with their cards until
they inform the Library that their card has been lost or stolen. Those
who cannot find their card are advised to notify the Library
immediately. The charge for a replacement card is $1.50 and is limited to wallet cards only.
LOST AND DAMAGED ITEMS
Cardholders are responsible for all items borrowed with their cards and
liable for the cost of repairing or replacing items that are lost or
damaged. Payments for lost items will be refunded if these items are
subsequently returned within 90 days of paying for lost items. If the
lost/damaged items are overdue, the cardholder must pay for the overdue
fines in addition to the price of the of the lost/damaged item(s).
SUSPENSION OF LIBRARY PRIVILEGES
Borrowing privileges of those who owe fines in excess of $3.00 will be suspended until fines are paid.

Borrowers who have no overdue items or unpaid fines in excess of $3.00 may borrow (or have checked out) up to a total of 50 items including books, magazines, and audiovisual materials limited to the following:
- Magazines—10 items
- CD or CD Book– 10 items
- DVD—5 items
The Library sends overdue notices by mail. Overdue fines are charged (based on the type of material borrowed) to encourage prompt return of materials and thereby increase their availability to the public.
For each day the Library is open, borrowers are charged the following overdue fines:

Cardholders may reserve titles in person, over the phone, or our website, then selecting “Library Catalog”. You must have a valid Hillside Library card. The library will notify patrons by mail when reserved items become available and will hold the items for up to 10 days from the date of the postcard.

Renewing Online
- Click on our catalog.
- Click on “My Account” and enter Library card number. Your PIN number is the last 4 digits of your card.
- Your account will be displayed.
- Click on the “Items Out” link.
- Check the box next to each item you wish to renew, and then click on the “Renew” button.
- They are already overdue.
- There is a hold, or reserve, on the item for another customer.
- You have exceeded the maximum number of renewals.
- Your account is blocked, perhaps due to a lost item or expired library card.
